TBS has developed a custom Air Flow Meter to maximise fuel consumption. An extra 80 to 100Km out of a tank of fuel has been achieved with an added power gain of 14 to 16 KW, from bottom end rpm all the way up to maximum rpm, depending on which model car it was fitted to.
Technical information
The purpose of an air flow Meter is to measure the amount of air and the speed at which it is entering the manifold. The engine's ECU uses the information from the Air Flow Meter to give the engine's fuel and ignition settings required from preset tables in the ECU set by the manufacturer. At the same time the engine ECU calculates the rate of speed the fuel and ignition settings need to be applied.
The standard ECU uses two different sensors to work out the fuel and ignition maps that the engine needs to run at any given throttle position.
The map sensor, which measures the vacuum in the inlet manifold, and the air flow meter, which informs the ECU the exact amount of air entering the engine, at what ever throttle opening. The air flow meter is a more refined sensor to help deliver better fuel consumption, and with this information the ECU also calculates the rate of speed the fuel and ignition tables are to be applied.
The air flow meter at constant part throttle measures the amount and the speed the air enters the inlet manifold. With this information the ECU is always calculating the best air fuel ratio and ignition settings preset by the manufacturer.
The air flow meter should never be removed except for extremely high horsepower engines or race cars.
